What is an Executive Techologist?

A “technologist” is a person who uses scientific knowledge and who is skilled in technology to solve practical problems.

An Executive Technologist is skilled in technology and problem solving but brings to the table attributes beyond those of technicians, engineers, or managers.  An Executive Technologist possesses additional traits and skills such as:

  • Business acumen

  • Formal business management training

  • Significant years of experience as a C-level executive

  • Demonstrated and recognized leadership qualities and a track record of success

How is an Executive Technologist different from a Chief Information Officer (CIO) or a Chief Technology Officer (CTO)?

There is considerable overlap and in many cases the roles may be equivalent.  The difference is mostly a matter of degree and breadth of scope.  However, an Executive Technologist:

  • May possess more years of experience

  • May have formal business training (BBA or MBA)

  • May have experience serving at a CEO level

  • May have experience serving at a Board of Directors level

  • May have experience in a broader range of organizations and industries

  • May have experience in a consulting role in addition to operational roles

Areas of Practice

IT Leadership/Mentoring

Board Service

If your organization’s mission success has significant technology dependencies or opportunities you may consider recruiting an Executive Technologist for your Board of Directors.

Interim CIO/CTO

If your organization is “ramping up” and needs to build out an IT team you may consider an Executive Technologist as an interim CIO/CTO. Or if your IT team is temporarily lacking a leader (due to a former leader’s departure), you may consider an Executive Technologist as an interim CIO/CTO

Consulting Engagements

If your organization has a poorly performing or underperforming IT department you may consider an Executive Technologist for a consulting engagement to identify weaknesses and/or strategies to improve and strengthen your IT team

If your organization has an IT team that is led by a younger or inexperienced manager or a technician recently promoted to manager level you may consider an Executive Technologist for an “IT Leadership” engagement in a coaching/mentoring role.  Or if your IT Team is lacking cohesiveness or effectiveness, you may consider an Executive Technologist to refine and improve the team.
